I paint to evoke memories of places - the colours, shapes, light, weather, time of day but also the less tangible sense of smells, sounds, thoughts or incidents that occur. I use a variety of media to explore subtlety and contrast of mark, translucency and density of colour. Recently I have introduced the use of more textural materials – plaster, sand, gesso – to express the geology of a place – the strata, folds, fissures – as well as the more recent marks of man. |

HISTORY Following graduation from West Surrey College of Art, I had a studio in the vibrant artists community of Wapping in London’s Docklands. My early paintings concerned the use of colour as an emotional response to surroundings and situations. I gained an insight into the subtlety of colour mixing which has been an important element in my subsequent work. During the 1980’s and early 90’s I travelled in Italy, Greece, India, Spain, Morocco and Turkey. The material and impressions gathered along the way, in the form of visual diaries was the main inspiration for my paintings, providing material for exhibitions. Certain places continue to inspire and I return to familiar locations such as Pembrokeshire and mid Wales, north west Cornwall and Andalucia. Closer to home my garden and the surrounding fields provide constant material. I live in Gloucestershire with my partner and daughter and teach at Stroud College of Art and Design. I exhibit locally and nationally. |
